Story, and detailing her visit to the Petersburg (Alaska) Public Library on her book signing visit last October.
Book display.
Karleen was invited to give a presentation about the Empty Chair Project by Jessica Ieremia, a librarian at the Petersburg Public Library, following the publication of her book, Quiet Defiance: Alaska’s Empty Chair Story.
Copies of the book were donated to the library and were available for purchase.
A book signing by the author followed the presentation.
Japanese families from Petersburg were among those sent to Minidoka from Alaska during World War II.
Some of them, such as the Kito family, relocated to Juneau after the war and became part of the Empty Chair story.
A banner situated just inside the front door of Petersburg’s beautiful library explained the Empty Chair Project to curious patrons.
“Meet the Author – Alaska’s Empty Chair Story”: Notice on digital screen located in the check-out section of the library.
A model replica of an ocean-going seiner carved by Tom Kito during his stay at Minidoka during World War II.
The Kito family was one of the Petersburg families incarcerated there for the duration of the war.
Karleen delivering her Power Point presentation on the Empty Chair Project with the aid of her daughter Stacy Grummett Sedgwick.
Stacy happily inhabiting her podium and controlling the flow of the Power Point.
A strand of cranes was presented to the library by Mrs.
Grummett.
In Japanese culture, cranes can represent healing, hope and peace during difficult times.
Jessica Ieremia, the librarian who invited Karleen to speak about the project and her book, accepts the colorful cranes on behalf of the library.
Pictured above are Stacy Grummett Sedgwick, Karleen Grummett, Margie Shackelford, Roxy Lee and her daughter Heidi Lee.
Roxy and her family made us feel very welcome in Petersburg!
While in Petersburg, we went to visit the Harry Kito Bridge.
After Harry died while serving his country during the Vietnam War, the city dedicated the bridge in his honor.
Karleen’s presentation was very well received, and our Petersburg visit made us feel we had gained additional support and enthusiasm for the Empty Chair Project.
Thank you Petersburg!!
How to Purchase a Book:
Because the book was written through a National Parks Confinement Sites Grant, the book is not commercially available.
It can be purchased through the Japanese American National Museum’s online gift shop or by contacting the Juneau-Douglas City Museum or the Alaska State Museum in Juneau.

Advertisements

Share this:Click to share on Google+ (Opens in new opening at the Perseverance Theater on the 18th at 7:30 p.m.
and playing through December 4th.
The Perseverance Theater asked Greg to join them in addressing this troubling event in ordered to report to internment camps outside Seattle.
Gordon chose to fight U.
S Government action rather than obey the order he felt was unlawful.
His experience in the courts and camps of the time sparked his passion for the U.S.
Constitution, and the courage of his convictions led him to the Supreme Court and a posthumous Medal of Freedom.
The one man show stars Grummett, the happy author of “Quiet Defiance: Alaska’s Empty Chair Story.”
Karleen Grummett’s new book, Quiet Defiance: Alaska’s Empty Chair Story, narrates the history of Japanese Americans in Juneau when it was a small, tightly-knit and remote community accessible only by water.
It shows how they reacted to their forced removal from Juneau, how their spirit and resolve helped them live during imprisonment and how they renewed their lives following it.
The story also describes how the community’s cross-cultural ties and friendships rallied support for their missing friends and led to a quest for justice more than 70 years later.
The publishing of this book was funded, in part, by a Japanese American Confinement Sites Grant from the Department of the Interior, National Park Service, together with funds raised by the Empty Chair Project.
Complimentary copies of the book will be given out at two celebratory book signings as gifts to the Juneau community which supported our efforts while supplies last.
The initial signing will be during First Friday at the new Valley Branch Library from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
on Friday, October 7th.
The second will be the next day at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum from 10:30-Noon, Saturday, October 8th.
Copies will be mailed to all schools, libraries and historical societies throughout Alaska and to family members affected by the incarceration itself plus other incarceration sites within our country.
In Juneau, multiple copies will be given to fifth grade classrooms, as it has become part of their Social Studies curriculum.
Additional copies will be placed in the libraries of Juneau’s high schools and added to the existing Empty Chair Collection.
We are so proud of Karleen and this wonderful book she has written that enlightens and adds to Alaskan history.
In addition, her book encompasses all the varied achievements of the Empty Chair Project, personal stories, historical photographs and colorful pictures of artifacts and Fumi Matsumoto’s art.
The front and back covers of “Quiet Defiance: Alaska’s Empty Chair Story.”
Here is a link to Author!

The Empty Chair Project, in conjunction with the National Park Service, is proud to announce the sponsorship of two best selling authors who will be in Juneau on May 5th and 6th.
The first to arrive is Kirby Larson, the author of Dash, a winner of the Scott O’Dell award for historical fiction.
She will be here to share this historical novel with students at local grade schools on Thursday, May 5th.
It’s a story about a Japanese-American girl who had to leave her adored dog Dash behind when her family was incarcerated in the Minidoka Relocation Center during WWII but is able to remain connected to Dash through the kindness of a friendly neighbor back home.
It is inspired by a true story and reflects events that run parallel to those occurring in the Empty Chair, emphasizing friendship, family and the resilience of the human spirit.
Kirby Larson’s book “Dash” for young adults.
Kirby will be doing at book signing from 5:00-6:00 at the downtown Hearthside book store on Wednesday, May 5th.
Here is a link to the interview with Kirby in the “Neighbors” section of the Juneau Empire on Sunday, May 1st.
the author of the celebrated book, Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, will be visiting a local high school on May 6th to talk about his novel which also explores similar themes. The book received numerous awards after being published in 2009.
Among them was an award for best “Adult Fiction” book at the 2010 Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature.
It is set in the International District of Seattle, Washington, and focuses on Henry Lee, an intelligent 12-year-old Chinese American who has to grow up quickly during WWII hysteria.
Seattle author Garth Stein commented, “A tender and satisfying novel set in a time and place lost forever, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet gives us a glimpse of the damage that is caused by war–not the sweeping damage of the battlefield, but the cold, cruel damage to the heart and humanity of individual people.
Especially relevant in today’s world, this is a beautifully written book that will make you think.
And more importantly, it will make you feel.”
He will be doing a book talk and signing at the downtown Juneau Public Library from 4-6 on Saturday, May 7th.
Multiple copies of both Dash and Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet were provided for the schools by the Empty Chair Project and the National Park Service.
Here is a link to an interview with Jamie in the /> May·02

Nuts and Bolts

Within the Silence
On October 8th and 9th of 2015, the actress Ruth Coughlin from Living Voices arrived in Juneau to once again deliver her remarkable performance of “Within the Silence” to Juneau’s fifth graders and the general public. With the aid of a computer, screen and microphone she played the part of one of the characters in the pre-filmed story of a family being rounded up in Seattle and sent to Minidoka for incarceration.
With expert timing, she fit her dialogue into what was occurring on the screen. Her first performance was the evening of October 8th at the University of Alaska Southeast.
The next morning she performed at Auke Bay Elementary School with students from Glacier Valley, Mendenhall River and Riverbend in attendance.
After lunch she moved on to Harborview Elementary School with students from Gastineau, Charter and Montisorri schools joining the group.
After preplanning and preparation by our Educational Consultant, Steve McPhetres, Jackie Triplette from the Empty Chair Committee coordinated Ruth’s appearances in all three venues plus escorting her to dinner, picking up halibut and salmon from local fans and dropping Ruth by the Skater’s Cabin for pictures in front of the Mendenhall Glacier on the way to the airport.
Jackie reports that “…the kids were absolutely remarkable…and patient…and attentive and asked questions.” And we report that Jackie also did a remarkable job and we thank her for her organizational skills and leadership.
The performance was paid for by funds from the Empty Chair Project and the National Park Service in an effort to continue educating our youth about this period in our history.
Ruth Coughlin performing “Within the Silence” at Auke Bay Elementary.
Discover Juneau Downtown Map
The Empty Chair is now listed in the Discover Juneau Downtown Map.
You can find a copy at the Juneau Convention and Visitor’s Bureau building at the docks plus other areas throughout the city.
The Empty Chair is listed as number 5 inside the brochure.
Here is the text of the entry.

The Milepost
The Empty Chair site was listed in the 2015 edition of Alaska’s annual travel guide, The Milepost.
The listing’s information about the site was located on page 655 among 25 attractions for the Juneau area.
The editors had requested the information from Karleen Grummett for their publication, so it’s nice to see that the memorial is officially cited in the guide for all who use it while traveling to Juneau and the rest of the state.
The guide has been published annually since 1949 and is considered the travel “bible” for all Alaska visitors, both local and out-of-state.
Text of the listing.

Thank You!
Nancy DeCherney, Executive Director of the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council informed us that the council has created a map of public art that can be used as an Art Walk of Juneau.
The Empty Chair Memorial is included on the map.
.
The map!

We’re listed as Number 21 on the map.

They are also working to catalogue public art in Juneau as part of the Public Art Network and we will be listed in that publication as well. We are very grateful to Nancy and the council for these inclusions and also for their support in facilitating the work of the Empty Chair Project through donations of their time and services.
Thanks once again for all you have done.
Day of Remembrance Gatherings
Anchorage, Alaska
Alice Tanaka Hikido and Mary Tanaka Abo.
Alice (Tanaka) Hikido and Mary (Tanaka) Abo joined Greg Chaney is Anchorage where they were invited to a showing of Greg’s film “The Empty Chair” in honor of the Day of Remembrance by the local Japanese American Citizen’s League.
The following is her report on that event:
I left San Jose Thursday morning and Mary joined me on the leg from Seattle to Anchorage.
After we had disembarked, we saw Greg Chaney who had just arrived from Juneau and also the JACL chairman, Susan Churchill.
After Susan took us all to our motel to check in, she invited us all to dinner at her home and said that she had also invited a few others to meet us.
Among the guests was Dr.
Morgan Blanchard, an archaeologist who had been doing some research on Ft.
Richardson.
His research led him to the information that Ft.
Richardson at one time was the site of an internment camp.
He was intrigued by this and continued research and uncovered quite a bit of information of the internment of the Japanese at Ft.
When he learned about the Day of Remembrance program that the JACL was planning, he contacted Susan Churchill about a tour of Ft.
To make a long story short, a program was planned that was held at the Ft.
on Thursday (early afternoon) at which time Mary and I participated and shared a little of our family experience and the Empty Chair story.
Another participant was 21 year old, Patrick Dickerson Kiyoshi Regan who was severely disabled and communicated by blinking his eyes which activated a mechanical voice.
He was able to tell the story of his mother’s father who was a Japanese American who was sent to an internment camp in Arizona.
He was truly amazing and even though his disability limited him physically in a major way, he possessed a very sharp intellect.
Later while talking with his parents, we learned that his father was Virginia Whitehead’s son! We always find a Juneau connection!
After we left Ft.
Richardson we picked up a bite to eat because we needed to get over to the public radio station by 5:30 as they had provided their studio for the showing of Greg’s “Empty Chair.” As the studio was being set up for the program, a reception was held in a separate area and early arrivals were able to chat and talk with us.
Mary and I were pleased to see Dean and Marianne Terencio who lived a short distance from our house.
I had not seen either of them for about 60 years.
At that time Dean was still a youngster! Also at the reception we met Buzz Femmer’s daughter who also now lives in Anchorage.
Mr.
Femmer is mentioned in the documentary as one of the persons who signed affidavits supporting our father, so I’m sure that was a pleasant surprise for her to see that on the screen.
Harriet Miyasato Beleal from the Minidoka Pilgrimage was also there with her daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter! The program was soon to start so people started to move over to the studio.
Susan said that about fifty people came to their program last year and they hoped that a few more would come this year.
The public radio station was a sponsor this year and announced the program giving it free publicity.
People kept coming and the room was packed! The staff had to scrounge around the building for additional chairs.
I heard that the audience was about 130-140 people.
It was a good thing the fire marshal didn’t come by.
Susan welcomed everyone and said a few words about the significance of The Day of Remembrance.
Next Ron Inouye, who was invited from Fairbanks, gave introductory remarks and then Greg had his chance to show “The Empty Chair.”
When it was over it got a very nice ovation from the audience and Mary, Greg and myself were invited up front for a Q and A time.
There were very good questions that came from the audience.
Even a small child in the front row, whose mother was signing to her deaf father, raised her hand to ask a question.
A person asked Greg when it was going to be on PBS so that more people can see it.
That was very validating for Greg! Mary answered one question about schools by telling the audience about the culture kits that had been assembled for schools which included an educational version of Greg’s documentary.
I could see people nodding their heads while she talked.
Later after the people were thanked for coming, many people came up to us and said how much they appreciated the documentary…and again there were Juneau connections.
We were so pleased to meet one of Verne Metcalfe’s daughters and she was so happy to be able to talk to us about her dad and grandfather who also made the City Café a regular stop.
Roberta Messerschmidt Spartz’s niece was also so pleasantly surprised to see Roberta in the documentary and was going to call her when she returned home.
As you can gather, it was a great event…well beyond expectations of the planners.
Mary and Greg went back to the Churchill’s residence because Susan was going to take them later to the airport around 12 midnight to catch a plane back to Seattle as they had another showing on Saturday there.
I was dropped off at the motel so that I could get a night’s rest before leaving in the morning.
When I returned I called Peter, who attended the San Francisco showing, to ask how that went.
He said that the audience was about 50 people and that he and Greg’s mother, who was there, took a few questions at the end, but since Greg and Mary were skyped on a large screen, they were able to do most of the Q and A themselves.
Mary will be able to fill you in on the Seattle program on Saturday and also the Taiko program where the banners were exhibited…whew…it was a full weekend!
Ah, but that wasn’t to be all.
Rachel D’Oro, a reporter from the Associated Press interviewed Alice in an article which was picked up by the Associated Press and then by papers all across the United States.
Here is a photo from that article and the accompanying text:
In this 1945 photo, members of the Tanaka family stand together at the Minidoka Japanese internment camp in Jerome, Idaho, where they were held in forced incarceration during World War II.
From left to right, Alice Tanaka Hikido, Mary Tanaka Abo in the foreground and behind her, Nobu Tanaka, John Tanaka in uniform and Shonosuke Tanaka.
JOINT BASE ELEMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska–Alice Tanaka Hikido clearly remembers the bewilderment and sense of violation she felt 74 years ago when FBI agents riffled through her family’s Juneau home, then arrested her father before he was sent to Japanese internment camps, including a little-known camp in pre-statehood Alaska.
The 83-year-old Campbell, Calif., woman recently attended a ceremony where participants unveiled a study of the short-lived internment camp at what is now Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage.
Archaeologists used old records to pinpoint the camp location in an area now partially covered by a parking lot.
“As I look back, I had no idea as a child that the U.S.
and Japan were having difficulties,” Hikido said.
Hikido was interned at Idaho’s Minidoka camp with her mother, younger sister and two brothers a few months after her father’s arrest during one of the nation’s darkest chapters–the forced incarceration of tens of thousands of people of Japanese ancestry, including Americans, during World War II.
Her father eventually joined his family in Idaho in 1944.
They spent more than a year there together before the war ended and they returned to Juneau.
Her father, Shonosuke Tanaka, was among 15 Japanese nationals and two German nationals rounded up in the territory of Alaska almost immediately after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.
That number would grow to 104 foreign nationals, mostly Japanese, who were arrested in Alaska as alien enemies.
An estimated 145 others also would be sent to internment camps outside the territory under Executive Order 9066, which launched the exile of about 120,000 Japanese-Americans.
Before leaving Alaska, Tanaka and 16 other men were briefly housed at the Anchorage Army post formerly known as Fort Richardson.
Archaeologists zeroed in on the site based on documents, including a map and two photographs, according to Morgan Blanchard, a local archaeologist who worked on the study.
“Although it was known that this camp existed–it shows up on all the lists of camps that existed during the war–no information was available,” Blanchard said during a Feb.
19 Day of Remembrance ceremony at the base.
“So we filled in a lot of blanks.”
Researchers believe–but can’t say with certainty–that the 17 foreign nationals who were sent to the post were actually held at the camp constructed between February and June 1945.
Today, Hikido sees the same distrust of some foreigners that her family experienced so many decades ago.
“It’s incumbent upon citizens to be well-informed,” Hikido said.
“If you’re well-informed then fear doesn’t overcome your better judgment.”
Seattle, Washington
Randy Wanamaker, Mary Abo, Connie Lundy and Greg Chaney.
Mary Abo and Greg Chaney attended the Asian American Film Festival in Seattle featuring the “Empty Chair” documentary amongst other entries and then went on to Seattle University to attend a fund raiser for Minidoka where the Empty Chair Banners were on display.
They are replicas of the placards that were displayed at the Juneau-Douglas Museum.
Mary gave a short speech in which she talked about the Alaskans incarcerated at Minidoka and briefly described the Empty Chair Memorial and the goals of the committee to educate the public and children of Juneau about this period of history and how it affected their city.
Juneau, Alaska
In Juneau, the Juneau-Douglas City Museum had on display at the Mendenhall Valley Library a portion of their 2014 exhibit “The Empty Chair: The Forced Removal and Relocation of Juneau’s Japanese, 1941-1951,” which was mounted in conjunction with the installation of the Empty Chair Memorial at Capital School Park.
Their remembrance event was held on Friday, Feb.
19 with a showing of Greg Chaney’s documentary plus a selection of stories, images and objects from the Museum exhibit and the memorial dedication was shared in a slide-lecture format by Marjorie Hamburger.
Pt.
Reyes, California
The week previous to The Day of Remembrance, Alice Hikido and Margie Shackelford were interviewed on radio station KWMR out of Pt.
Reyes, California, by Susan Santiago on a program called “Pieces of Peace.” Alice talked about her families experiences during and after WWII and Margie covered the Empty Chair Project, emphasizing the community support that the project received.
At the end they read the names of all those whose names are etched on the base of the memorial.
We have been successful in addressing a much wider audience then we ever thought possible and for that we are very grateful!
Greg Chaney
Here is a link ceremony to underscore the absence of their Japanese-American Valedictorian, John Tanaka.
By extension, this empty chair honors all of the Japanese uprooted from their homes and communities.
The Empty Chair Memorial represents the void the people of Juneau felt for their friends and neighbors impacted by this injustice.
The names of those interned are etched on the bronze floor.
A time may come when these names will be forgotten, but the symbol of the empty chair will remind future generations of the lessons learned from this compelling and poignant story.

Artist Peter Reiquam's concept for the memorial is illustrated above.
As he so eloquently expressed it, "The story is a moving one, both for the families who were affected and for the community whose citizens were taken from their midst.
Equally moving is the story of these same exiled families' return and the way that the community welcomed them home and supported their efforts to pick up where their lives had left off."
The Juneau Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee approved the siting of the Empty Chair Memorial in Capital School Park.
The symbol of the Empty Chair addresses the absence of the Class of 1942's Valedictorian who had been forcibly removed, and by extension, an entire community of Japanese and Japanese Americans.
The Fukuyama, Taguchi, Komatsubara, Kito, Kanazawa, Akagi and Tanaka families will be among those remembered.
The internment happened 72 years ago.
This memorial we are proposing has been waiting to materialize for a very long time.
It addresses both the internees and the community's response to the event.
We call this effort the Empty Chair Project.
Empty Chair middle of dry desert land, totally different from the places that these Japanese people were sent from.
Glad I opened the email and followed it through.
Just a small way we all of that period in time are tied together in history.
I lived a long ways from Juneau at that period of our history but in a very small way feel connected to your project.
All Americans should feel tied to your project as this is our country, all of us, and forms of this type of discrimination are still going on and we could be next."
-Larry Mathews
"Wonderful news.
The grant that has been
tested by fire; love that has withstood swelling waters.
It was not easy.
I
have done most of the “I Will Nevers” and dropped almost all of the “We Will Always.”
Our love has been shaken and torn down and rebuilt at least
a dozen times. And just when I am sure
we have our footing, the bottom drops out again.
Just when I am sure of what it
is, something comes along and proves me wrong; more breaking, more burning, more
tearing down.
It hurts like hell and it is terrifying.

But every time it happens, when the smoke clears and the
waters recede, I look up and see Him more clearly.
I love Him more honestly, I
know Him more intimately, and I trust Him more completely; I am more sure of
Him.
When the scar tissue begins to form, I understand more than ever before
that He is It.
He is my one true thing.
That life is horrible, hard, heavy, and
heartbreaking but without Him, it’s nothing at all.
Where is God on your very worst day? Where is God when the
bottom drops out? Where is God when the absolute worst outcome becomes reality?
When all your hopes are dashed? When the healing doesn’t happen?
When we hope in anything but Him, we will be crushed.
When we
hope in the healing and not The Healer, we have put something besides God on
the throne.
When we rest our faith on a move of God above God himself, we have
worshipped an idol.
When we buy into the lie that a life of faith will buy us material
blessing and protection from pain, we are believing heresy.

The Good news is this: He loves us.
He never leaves us; when
everything in our world burns, including us.
Everything we thought to be true
about ourselves, the world, and Him, shatters.
When all that falls away, we are
left with Him.
Eternally Him.
Unshaken, unchanged, unbroken.
Eleven months ago in my Darkest Hour, He spoke
to me.
He did not leave me.
And He did not leave Paul.

I have wrestled, fought, questioned, pushed back, accused,
flailed, spiraled.
I have doubted His existence, questioned His goodness, I
have lobbed flaming accusations.

I am still out here in the wilderness.
Yet I am not alone; I
know He is with me, eternally.

2 Corinthians
4:7-18
But we
have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs
to God and not to us.
We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed;
perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck
down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so
that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
For we who live
are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus
also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.
So death is at work in us, but life
in you.
Since we
have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed,
and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that he who
raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into
his presence.
For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and
more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
So we do
not lose heart.
Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being
renewed day by day.
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an
eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things
that are seen but to the things that are unseen.
For the things that are seen
are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
See what
kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of
God; and so we are.
The reason why the world does not know us is that it did
not know him.
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not
yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we
shall see him as he is.
And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as
he is pure.
8 comments:
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Wednesday, September 9, 2015
On being "back"
Lately I have a little bit more bandwidth.
Lately I have
started being able to do some of the things I used to do.
And lately, people
have been saying to me: “You’re back.”
Please don’t be mistaken, friends.
I am in no way “back.”
You see, there is no coming back from where I have been.
To say that I am
“back” is to imply that somehow I have returned to the girl I was before eleven
o’clock in the morning on December 11th, 2014.

Before I got that horrible phone call.
Before my world was
shaken and my heart was shattered.

That girl is gone.
She will never return.
I think you could more
easily resuscitate my brother than the girl that I was on December 10th. People have said often that they “miss the
old me.” I can tell you this: Not as much as I do.
I would give anything to
undo the damage that has been done.

Mostly because undoing that damage would mean that my
brother would still be here laughing and scheming and breathing.
But he is not.
And because of that, I carry a weight and a scar that will go with me until
Jesus calls me home.

Do not misunderstand me.
I am not without hope and peace and
joy.
I have those things.
But I also have anguish and pain that sometimes
levels me.
Sometimes I look at a picture of him and the realization that he is
really gone and he is gone forever, it punches me straight in the gut.
Most
days I feel completely irreparable.
I am moving forward.
But I will never move on.
His death
will now always be a part of me, just like Paul himself will always be a part
of me.

This week is Suicide Awareness Week.
Light a candle.
Buy a shirt from Sevenly (their campaign this week benefits National Suicide Prevention Lifeline).
Pray for my family.
Remember Paul..
The man, the myth, my brother.
2 comments:
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Monday, July 28, 2014
Back in the Saddle
This past Saturday we went to the first training that we need to become an active foster home again.
It's been over two years since we have done foster care.
A lot has happened in two years.
We have fought an appeal, adopted, and moved in a young mom and her son.
We have been busy, but not with foster care.
On the way driving out to the training I had a pretty epic meltdown.
I said it was about hamburgers and running late but I know myself well enough to know that my freakouts are never about what I say they are about.
While we were driving and I was crying, Matt offered to turn around.
"We don't have to do this!" he said, "We can go back!" I considered it for a second.
We don't have to do this.
My life is full enough.
Complicated enough.
Then, I remembered the thing that I always remember.
I remembered the kid.
The kid I haven't met.
The kid I know nothing about.
The kid that's already out there, most likely experiencing a version of hell that you and I have not had to survive.
That thought made my heart shrink down to the size of a raisin.
That thought makes me want to simultaneously lie down curled, and run through walls.
As we come up on our sixth year doing foster care, knowing what we know, seeing what we've seen, the question has gone from: "How can we do this?" to: "How can we not do this?"
My husband lied.
The first part was right, we don't have to do this.
But his second statement was a lie...
We can never go back.
No comments:
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Sunday, July 13, 2014
The truth about Emman
He skidded into our lives on the tail end of the hardest placement in our foster care career.
I often liken the time with that placement to wearing shoes that were too small...for nine months. When Emmanuel came, we were emotionally drained from caring for these extremely needy kids whose personalities just never really meshed with ours.

Emman came with some diagnoses on paper that, once we got him in our home, we realized we were dealing with someone very different than who we had met on paper.
We went from having a kid with cerebral palsy on paper to a kid with a very real sensory disorder and attachment disorder. The implications of these new diagnoses were much more abstract and much less concrete than what we expected.
Then, right before we were supposed to consummate the adoption, we got news that his bio dad was going to fight.
That fight lasted seventeen grueling months.
Sometimes, when Emman has the hiccups he says: "I am hiccup," I smile and agree.
He is hiccup.
Nothing with Emman has gone as planned or as expected.
He has been hard won.
From his legal standing, to his services, to his affection, to his diagnoses.
Fight of my life.
That phrase echoed in my head when the appeal began.
The appeal was the fight of my life in a lot of ways.
It felt heavy and awful.
It was an invisible cloud of uncertainty.
An unbecoming filter that colored everything I did and everywhere I went.
The chance of losing him was crouching in the corner of every room I walked into for seventeen months.
I wanted to hold back from this kid who desperately needed me to give unreservedly.
I wanted to protect myself from the pain of losing my son.
I had to fight to keep hope, and faith that all would work together for my good.
Or that, if it didn't, would God still be good? Could I still proclaim that? I look back on the seventeen months and all I know is it felt like what war must feel like.
That it felt like something was pinning me down.
That hope was always one inch beyond my fingertips.
I look back through my journal and it's pages and pages of scratching out verses about the character of God, of the promises of God, and begging them to be true.
Begging Him not to change my life, but my heart.
It took up most of my emotional energy most days.
All the while trying to fight for his affection.
And trying to fight for control of this little tornado.
He bucks everything from my boundaries to my affection.
We were at Hope Connection Camp last month and the family counselor and I were talking about my competitiveness (shocking, right?) and he said: "When it comes to kids in your peer group, like the children of your friends, who is winning?" I didn't hesitate.
"Me." I have held back from writing about Emman because I don't want to be misunderstood.
Or because I felt like having a different relationship with him than Isaiah is wrong.
Bonding with a two year old when you have just twinned your two year old is...the truth about Emman is that he is HARD.
He is stubborn and contrary.
He is volatile and unpredictable.
He is complicated.
He pushes you away while clawing to keep you close.
I am constantly assessing whether what we are facing is developmental, sensory, or just cheekiness.
He bucks and fights me every step.
He is exhausting.
Someone asked me the other day if I mainlined cocaine to keep up with him.
I don't.
He is a constant vibration of whirling energy.
The truth about Emman is that I lose sleep over him.
I worry about him making friends.
I worry about him in school.
I worry about if he will ever attach to us in the way I want him to.
I worry if he will be misunderstood.
But the truth about him is that he is hilarious and quirky.
He is brilliant.
He is affectionate and friendly.
The truth about Emman is that all of the fighting, the hiccups, the complications, the missteps, mishaps, and set backs have only added richness to my life.
The truth about Emman is that I have gotten so many things wrong in the last two years and many days have felt like losses.
The truth about Emman is that he is my beloved son and that is a win.
Its THE win.
3 comments:
Email found and covered up.
Then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."
Matthew 13:44
This verse has been rattling around in my brain the last few weeks as I reflected on the last year for our family and looked ahead to the next year.
As I have prayed and asked the Lord for vision, this is what keeps popping up.
So I think maybe this year is about buying the field.
I have been thinking a lot about the cost of following Jesus on my life, my kids, my family.
I have been counting the cost of the Kingdom.
I think this year, more than any other year, the cost has become very real to me.
We have had to truly consider and sacrifice things we thought were important, the things we thought we needed and the things we thought we valued.
We have had to lay down our lives and follow this call.
It has been painful and uncomfortable and stretching.
This year more than any other year I think Jesus has become very real to me.
Before I didn't really believe that the Kingdom could come in my minivan, at my dining room table, in my time, in my finances, in my life.
But that's because I never made space for it to come.
I never let God have it to do what He pleased with it.
But once I started, I couldn't stop.
I handed Him a piece and He transformed it from mundane, plain, and ugly to a thing of beauty.
I handed Him another piece and He cleaned it up and multiplied it.
I handed Him my Saturday and He filled it with picnics and baby showers with these precious mamas and their babies.
I handed Him my minivan and my gas budget (for real) and He filled it to bursting with life and friendship and laughter and the CUTEST babies ever.
I handed Him my plans and my spare room and He grew people into my family in a way I could never imagine, but now I couldn't imagine my family without them.
I handed Him my heart and He transformed it so I could love Him better and filled it with a deeper love for his people.
At the end of my life, I probably won't have aged beautifully, I probably won't get to retire early, or travel the world.
My kids will probably not have new clothes or the finest education.
But maybe I will have the field.
See, the cost of the Kingdom is that my kids spend a lot of time in their car seats while I shuttle people around to appointments and school.
They share me and they share their stuff.
That I don't get a lot of ME time.
That my husband and I don't hardly have date nights.
Our house is always messy.
There is always too much month left over at the end of the paycheck.
But we have the field.
And we are selling everything else.
1 comment:
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Wednesday, November 13, 2013
Revival
The good news of the Gospel is that God came down and made my problems His.
How do I reconcile walking out the Gospel if I don't make the problems of others mine?
We belong to each other.
We all belong to Him.
It is what the Kingdom of God was designed for.
Bearing one another's burdens.
People tell me ALL.
THE.
TIME: "You cannot save them all!" Damn right.
Actually, not a single one; but that's not what I was designed for anyways.
What I can do is lighten the load.
I can come along side.
I can feed, clothe, and shelter.
I can defend and educate.
If I am not using that with which I am blessed to bless others and if I do not use my position to lift others, then what is it for?
A life spent on yourself is a wasted life.
This week I was trying to help a young pregnant woman find housing.
I called one of the local mega churches and received an 82 page document referring other local resources that could help.
That was all they could offer.
They have a huge campus with a coffee shop, and tons of other amenities.
We have the opportunity to be the hands and feet and we blow it all the time.
We have the opportunity to make the Gospel real and we cannot be bothered.
We long for revival and the words of Isaiah still ring true...
If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.11 The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations;you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
I used to think that feeding the homeless or clothing the naked or visiting the sick made me a "good Christian" - whatever that is - but really, that just made me a decent human.
Christ calls us to something bigger and more final.
Death.
When we settle for this lukewarm brand of Christianity, this self-insulated life, we are doing something worse than selling ourselves short.
We are selling The Gospel short.
The good news is that when you die to yourself, your plans and your comforts, you truly do find life.
I can say with every one of my deaths I have found so much more life, so full it is bursting at the seams.
Dizzy and pulsing. More gut-wrenching and more spirit-filling. Life harder than I could have imagined yet better than I would have ever expected, because it is so out of left field and miraculous I would have NEVER dreamed it.

He is using me.
I see it all around me now.
Not because I am good, but because He is Good.
He is weaving my story, my insignificant thread, into the stories and lives of others in this incredible master tapestry of redemption.
He is bringing revival in my dead heart.
1 comment:
Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest
Sunday, August 18, 2013
On Missing Out and Miracles
Today, I was in the room where a baby was born.
I was honored to witness a mama push her baby out into the world.
A miracle, no doubt.
I have never wanted biological children.
And I don't know all the reasons.
I can't name them.
Birthing just doesn't appeal to me.
Not the way that adoption and foster care do.
Sometimes, I wonder if there's something wrong with me.
People say things to me like: "But it's what you were created to do." Or they say: "Don't you want to experience the miracle of creating a life?" And then: "Aren't you worried you're missing out?"
So when my path crossed with that of the young pregnant girl six months ago, I would never have thought I would be standing in the room while she labored and pushed for her baby.
Honestly, during the last three months of going to classes and sonograms and preparing for today, I wondered in the back of my mind if all this would start a certain itch or scratch or I'd hear something biological tick or whatever.
Welp, it didn't.
But I did come out of that room certain about some things.
Maybe I was created to do this.
Hi FAN1T9VY, Welcome to the Knowledge Community Here you can talk to other users about things like video editing, photo editing and music production with IzPznBXH. Just sign in with your email address and password and create your first post! Register now Have fun! Kind regards, The Community team Follow us General This is an automatically generated email. It is attached to this email, and available online at dataharmonization.org/newsletter/. The newsletter is produced by CONSIRT (CONSIRT.osu.edu), of The Ohio State University and the Polish Academy of Sciences. This issue features news of grants won by members of the Harmonization Project and articles by the international survey data community, which speak to the diversity of harmonization research in the social sciences. Tom Emery writes about how to harmonize administrative data with survey data in the cross-national Generations and Gender Survey; Ilona Wysmułek presents the issues on the comparability of corruption perception items in major public opinion surveys, and Marta Kołczynska, Irina Tomescu-Dubrow and Kazimierz M. Slomczynski discuss issues in harmonizing education across nations and time. A goal of the Newsletter is to help build a community of scholars, institutions and government agencies interested in survey data harmonization. We invite you to contribute your articles, news, and new publications to future Newsletters. We are planning the next one for Spring 2018. We hope that you find this Newsletter of interest, and if so, that you would consider forwarding it to others who would also be interested. Since the undergraduate education system in China is modeled after its American counterpart, all the degrees are adapted from those of the United States excepting the release of the degree certificate. Once a student has fulfilled his/her course requirements, a graduate certificate will be given. In order to get the degree, a student must finish and pass the dissertation stage; only then will he or she be awarded a degree credentialed by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Four years of education is the standard length, although some private small colleges not credentialed by the Ministry of Education do offer three-year programs. Normally, about 90% of graduates are able to obtain a degree; however, no degree is awarded with excellence or honor. It is also referred to as a "Xueshi" (??).
