Welcome to English 2122 taught via Desire2Learn. The s yllabus and schedule of assignments for this class are attached to this email. They are also available on both Desire2Learn (D2L) and on my Faculty web page . You will be able to access D2L starting the morning of Wednesday, May 18 . You can access D2L pages from anywhere where you can gain access to the Internet. (It is recommended that you access the class via the Firefox browser.) Please review the syllabus carefully, since it w ill give you an overview of the class and, most importantly, the requirements set for the rest of the semester. Crucial points are covered in section 7 and 8. Consequently, the main post for Unit 01 is due by Monday, May 23 , at 11:59 pm EST. And all the re sponse posts for Unit 01 will be due by Wednesday, May 25 , at 11:59pm EST. (Do keep in mind that late assignments in this online class will not be accepted.) All the readings are listed for the entire semester so you can pace yourself and read ahead of sch edule. Each successive reading unit will open, once the term starts, either Wednesdays at 12:01am EST or Sundays at 12:01 am EST. Apart from the 21 posts required as a bare minimum, you will complete 3 essays (one from each literary period — about 1000 words each), a midterm and a final exam . This class will require frequent communication and I will make myself as available to you as possible. Your homework for the first week of class is for you to introduce yourself in the class forum . This introduction wil l be used to confirm your attendance in the class; if you do not introduce yourself in the forum you may be dropped from the class for non - attendance. Before the end of Friday, May 20, locate the class forum discussion area and please introduce yourself an d present your ideas for this class, including expectations and previous experiences with online instruction. Once you have done this, click on your profile settings and upload a picture of yourself. Then, let us begin studying the texts listed in Unit 01 in the schedule of assignments. Starting Monday, May 23, go to the discussion area once you have read the material and then initiate posts, keeping in mind that my reading guide is meant to serve only as a guideline for your own original posts; it is not a set of specific questions you must answer. Before you post, please read the syllabus carefully, since many of the guidelines are presented therein. Check your Gordon email every day as well, as that will be the main means I have to communicate with you as a class. ( I advised you to avoid using the internal D2L email program; I do not check that regularly. Send all email to me at ddavis@gordonstate.edu.) I wish you all success in English 2122 and I am confident you will do well with the honest effort put fo rth. I am looking forward to knowing all of you. See the other important information about dates in the newsfeed as well . Cheers! Dr.
